Description
(Lindera benzoin) Native. Nicely shaped shrubs with deep green leaves for a border or naturalizing. Over 20 species of birds, as well as deer, rabbits, raccoons, and opossums browse the leaves or eat the fruits. The fruits are a special favorite of wood thrushes; a harbinger of spring. Dry fruits have been used in fragrant sachets. Somewhat slow to reestablish. Soil: moist, well-drained. Light: good choice in shady locations but can grow in full sun. Height 6-12’. Zones: 4-7.
