Black Spruce: (Picea mariana) Black spruce is a small, narrow evergreen tree with a spire-like crown. It has descending branches, with dark, bluish-green needles, and upturned ends. It has smaller and rounder cones than the other spruces that are violet in color and turn dark reddish-brown as they mature. Lower limbs sweep the ground. It is an excellent choice for cold northern climates and has a preference for wetter lowland areas. Provides food source for snowshoe hares, red squirrels, chickadees, pine siskin, grosbeaks, nuthatches, and crossbills. The ruby-crowned kinglet, magnolia warbler, Cape May warbler, and ovenbird commonly nest in Black Spruce. Mature height/width: 30-50 ft high/20-30 ft. wide. Slow growth rate (12″ or less per year). Zones 2-6.
