Description

New this year!

(Rhus aromatica) Fragrant sumac is a low growing shrub forming a thick, dense mass of stems. Used en masse as a ground cover, it is an excellent shrub for stabilizing banks and slopes. The glossy, blue-green leaves emit a lemon scent when crushed and turn a mixture of red, burgundy, and purple in the fall. The berries on this sumac are edible and high in Vitamin C. Tthere is not much fruit flesh to eat them raw, but they can be dried out and crushed to a powder to make a spice, infused with water to make a lemonade-like drink, or boiled down to create a syrup. Grows in a variety of soils. Drought tolerant. Prefers full sun to partial shade. Flowers in early spring. Yellow blooms. Mail and female plants, with only the female producing the flowers and berries. Spreads readily through suckering. Attracts birds, bees, and butterflies. Mature height: 6-12ft. Zones: 3 – 9.

2-3 feet high at pick-up!
